Farm Table Rentals vs. Round Tables: Which Is Right for Your Event?

Southern Events Products

round table rentals for events in Franklin and Nashville TN

One of the earliest rental decisions clients face is also one of the most consequential. Farm tables and round tables create fundamentally different guest experiences. They fill space differently, photograph differently, and shape the flow of conversation in ways most people don’t fully consider until they’re standing in a venue trying to picture it. At Southern Events, we’ve helped clients across Middle Tennessee navigate this decision for over 20 years.

What Is the Difference Between a Farm Table and a Round Table for Events?

A farm table, also called a banquet or dining table, is a long rectangular surface that seats guests along both sides and occasionally at the ends. A round table seats guests in a circle, with no defined head or foot. The functional difference is significant. Farm tables create a linear, communal dining experience where conversation runs lengthwise down the table. Round tables create an enclosed group experience where every seat faces the center. Neither is inherently better. They serve different purposes and suit different venue shapes, guest counts, and aesthetic goals.

Farm Tables: When Long and Communal Is the Right Call

The aesthetic case for farm tables

Farm tables carry visual weight. A long run of wood down the center of a venue is a statement before a single guest sits down. They photograph dramatically, especially from an elevated angle, and they create the kind of long, layered tablescape that showcases florals, candles, and linen details most effectively. Our farm table inventory covers a range of finishes to suit different aesthetics:

  • The Aged Oak Dining Table brings warm, natural texture. It works beautifully with greenery, candlelight, and earthy palettes.
  • The White Antique Dining Table is a clean, versatile option that suits garden-style, classic, and modern romantic aesthetics equally well.
  • The Fruitwood Farm Table offers a rich, mid-tone wood that pairs naturally with warm metallics and organic textures.
  • The Raven Black Farm Table is the most dramatic option. It works well for moody, modern, or high-contrast event designs.

Styling farm tables with runners

Farm tables are typically left without a full linen, which lets the wood finish do the work. The natural complement is a table runner rather than a full cloth. Our Sahara Runners are available in Natural, Ivory, Sage, and Rust. Each adds texture and color without covering the table surface entirely. Natural and Ivory keep the look clean and classic. Sage and Rust introduce organic color that pairs well with seasonal florals and greenery.

When farm tables work best

Farm tables suit long, narrow venues where round tables would feel cramped. They also work well outdoors, where the linear layout follows the natural flow of a tented or open-air space. For events where the tablescape itself is a design priority, farm tables give florals and decor the longest possible canvas to work across.

Do farm tables or round tables work better for outdoor events?

Farm tables tend to be the stronger choice outdoors. Their linear footprint works naturally within tented structures and open-air layouts. They’re also easier to anchor visually in a wide outdoor space where round tables can feel scattered. That said, a mix of both can work well outdoors when the venue shape supports it.

Round Tables: When Intimacy and Flexibility Matter More

The case for round tables

Round tables are the more flexible option. They fit a wider range of venue shapes, scale more easily to different guest counts, and create a naturally intimate dining experience where every seat feels equal. They’re also the more familiar format for corporate events, galas, and formal seated dinners where guests expect a traditional layout.

What is the difference between a farm table and a round table for events in terms of seating?

A standard 60-inch round table seats 8 to 10 guests comfortably. A standard 8-foot farm table seats 8 to 10 as well, but the experience is different. Round tables allow easier cross-table conversation within the group. Farm tables encourage conversation with the guests immediately to your left and right, and across from you, but make it harder to engage with guests further down the table.

Styling round tables with linens

Our round tables are the same in shape and size, so the linen is where the design work happens. The range is wide. Blue Bloom and Vine brings a fresh, floral print that works beautifully for spring and garden-style events. Velvet tablecloths in rich, saturated colors add depth and warmth for fall, winter, and evening events. Satin tablecloths offer a polished, classic finish that suits formal weddings and corporate galas. The linen choice essentially sets the entire tone of the table, which gives round tables a versatility that farm tables, by nature of their visible wood finish, don’t have in the same way.

Bonus: The Serpentine Table

For clients who want the communal, long-table feel of a farm table with a more organic shape, the Serpentine Table is worth knowing about. Its curved sections can be configured into sweeping S-shapes or gentle arcs that fill a venue space in a way neither a straight farm table nor a round table can. It’s a less common choice, which is part of the appeal. It photographs distinctively and creates a genuine focal point in the room.

Can You Mix Farm Tables and Round Tables at the Same Event?

Yes, and it’s a common approach for larger events. A long farm table for the wedding party or head table paired with round tables for guests is one of the most effective ways to create visual hierarchy in a reception space. The farm table draws the eye and anchors the room. Round tables fill the remaining space efficiently without competing with it. The key is keeping the linen and decor language consistent across both table styles so the room reads as one cohesive design.

Still Deciding? We Can Help With That.

The farm table rental vs. round table rental decision shapes the guest experience more than most people expect. For events across Middle Tennessee, including Franklin, Nashville, Brentwood, and Spring Hill, it’s one of the first conversations we have with new clients, and one of the most useful ones. When the event is celebrating the best weddings of the year, the setup has to show up. ✨

This year's @wedsociety.nashville Book of Weddings release was exactly that — vintage-inspired glassware, elegant furnishings, metallic accents against an ornate venue that already had a lot to say. Feminine, colorful, and completely cohesive from the first detail to the last. Honored to be part of it.

A farm to table setup done well is really just about getting the basics right. The right table, the right glass, and food that does the talking. Southern Events handles the first two. 🍋

Hard to argue with the visuals. 🍹

Glassware tends to get finalized late in the rental process and it's one of the details that guests interact with more than almost anything else at an event. Every person at a cocktail hour is holding a glass for the better part of an hour. That's a long time for a rental decision to either elevate or undercut the rest of the setup.
