How to Layer Textures and Elements for a Maximalist Event Table

On Trend, Southern Events Products, Trends and Inspiration

maximalist wedding design

Creating an event table that wows your guests is an art form, especially when you lean into the “more is more” mentality of maximalist design. At Southern Events Party Rental, we offer a variety of patterned linens and eclectic serving ware to help you craft an utterly unforgettable aesthetic. Keep reading for maximalist event table ideas, including tips on how you can achieve a maximalist design that is bold yet balanced!

So, What is Maximalist Design?

Maximalist design is the opposite of minimalist design. While minimalism focuses on simplicity and restraint, maximalism encourages the use of colors, prints, objects, and textures to showcase your personality. This design philosophy is perfect for event tables, where you can combine various elements to create a space that’s chaotic yet elegant. Contrary to popular belief, maximalist design doesn’t mean clutter! With our expert guidance, you can create a tablescape that’s both over-the-top and functional, ensuring your guests are wowed by every detail.

Lots of Layering, Please!

One of the easiest ways to create a maximalist table is by layering linens and rentals. You might have seen layered linens in the form of soft and breezy runners or contrasting patterns. But don’t stop there—consider layering with elements like serving platters. With the rising popularity of charcuterie and grazing boards, appetizers can become part of your design. Imagine fresh sourdough rolls in baskets or an array of meats and cheeses on silver trays, adding both visual interest and culinary delight to your table.

Mix Prints & Textures

While it’s typical to feature one standout piece in traditional design, maximalism encourages multiple bold elements. More specifically, combining different patterns and textures, whether it’s table linens, china, or glassware. The key is to maintain balance and know when enough is enough! Think of it as controlled chaos where each item adds to the overall aesthetic without overwhelming the senses. For example, feature a funky Verdant Bloom tablecloth in contrast to sleek Onyx Earthen China and a bold Hot Pink Velvet Napkin.

Color is Your Best Friend

Color is a powerful tool in maximalist design. While a splash of color is a fun addition to any tablescape, maximalist design allows for more unique color combinations, including metallics. Play with contrasting tones or feature different shades of one color to create depth and interest. For example, try mixing the Savannah Sage Plaid tablecloth with green floral Liana China. From bold linens to colored glassware, embrace the freedom to experiment with color to make your table truly stand out.

Don’t Underestimate Cutlery

Flatware is often an afterthought, chosen to match existing metallics in china or chargers. However, in maximalist design, cutlery is an accessory—much like jewelry—that can elevate your tablescape. We offer a variety of unique flatware collections that will grab your guests’ attention and complement your overall design. Think beyond the basics and choose pieces that enhance the visual appeal of your table, such as the Noir Matte Black or Silver Como Flatware.

Neutral Maximalism

While we love color, it’s not a requirement for a stunning maximalist tablescape. You can achieve an equally impressive look with neutral tones by combining a variety of minimalist rentals. The key is to focus on texture and layering to create a rich, inviting space. Such as glassware! While you don’t need three glasses for each place setting, there is no harm if your many consist of three unique beverages. Neutral doesn’t have to mean boring; with the right mix of elements, you can create a maximalist table that’s sophisticated and chic.

When the event is celebrating the best weddings of the year, the setup has to show up. ✨

This year's @wedsociety.nashville Book of Weddings release was exactly that — vintage-inspired glassware, elegant furnishings, metallic accents against an ornate venue that already had a lot to say. Feminine, colorful, and completely cohesive from the first detail to the last. Honored to be part of it.

Hard to argue with the visuals. 🍹

Glassware tends to get finalized late in the rental process and it's one of the details that guests interact with more than almost anything else at an event. Every person at a cocktail hour is holding a glass for the better part of an hour. That's a long time for a rental decision to either elevate or undercut the rest of the setup.

The best weddings have a thread running through them.

This one carried it from the ceremony rows to the reception table — soft, light, and unhurried. Sage accents in the glassware and napkins, scalloped china that added just enough character 🤍
